Cycling tour into the countryside: From Rome via Formello and Sacrofano
Anyone who knows Rome knows the hustle and bustle. But just a few kilometers north of the city limits, a completely different world begins: green, tranquil, and dotted with historical traces. The following bike tour combines nature, culture, and a sporting challenge – ideal for a quick spin. The route: Rome – Prima Porta – Formello – Sacrofano – Prima Porta – back to Rome.
Start in Rome – through the hustle and bustle of the city
The tour begins in Rome; traffic is manageable, but finding the bike path along the Tiber is a challenge. Carrying your bike is a must! Then it heads out of the city toward Prima Porta.
Prima Porta – The gateway to the surrounding area
Prima Porta marks the transition between town and countryside. Modern infrastructure meets historical traces here – including the ancient Via Flaminia. The first inclines signal that the Roman Campagna is more than just flat. From here, the true landscape experience begins.
Formello – Medieval flair and wide views
The route continues northwest to Formello. Nestled among rolling hills, the town is known for its well-preserved old town with cobblestone streets and small squares. It's an ideal place for a break. Cafés and fountains invite you to linger while admiring the vast landscape. Just before Formello, you pass Lazio's training camp.
Sacrofano – Hilly, green and charming
From Formello, the route continues to Sacrofano, a quiet village with a rural character. The route in between offers pure nature: forests, fields, olive groves, and frequent views of the Roman hills. Sacrofano itself is slightly elevated and also boasts a charming old town.
Return journey via Prima Porta to Rome
The return journey follows a similar route via Prima Porta back to the city. The route is now familiar, and the detours are shorter.
Tip:
There is a bar in every town along the route where you can get a coffee and fresh drinks.
