The picturesque landscape of southern Tuscany and northern Lazio offers ideal conditions for an impressive cycling tour. The route leads from Manciano via Pitigliano to Lake Bolsena, combining cultural highlights with breathtaking natural experiences.
Starting point: Manciano
Manciano, often called the "lookout post of the Maremma," sits atop a hill and offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside all the way to the Tyrrhenian Sea from the Rocca Aldobrandesca fortress. The narrow streets and historic buildings invite you to linger before we begin our journey.
Manciano to Pitigliano
From Manciano, we head southeast for about 18 kilometers to Pitigliano. This route takes us through rolling hills and offers numerous impressive views. Pitigliano, known as "Little Jerusalem" due to its historic Jewish community, impresses with its buildings carved into tuff stone, spectacularly perched on a rocky outcrop. A stroll through the old town and a visit to the synagogue are highly recommended.
Pitigliano to Lake Bolsena
We continue south to Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. The route from Pitigliano to the lake is approximately 25 kilometers and leads through the characteristic landscape of Lazio. Along the way, we pass the charming village of Latera. Upon reaching the lake, there's a small bar at the end of the dirt road for a welcome refreshment.
